Maia was born on July 9, 2000, in Oakland, California, and grew up near Lake Merritt. Her father is German and Scottish and her mother is Chinese-American. She loved taking art and architecture classes in school. She had little interest in music; Maia began learning violin with her brother in first grade. A few years later she began playing trumpet and classical cello.

She tried out for her school’s rock band in fifth grade. She joined as a singer, remembering singing “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World when she was asked to sing the Oasis song “Wonderwall” during the requisite cello audition. She began playing guitar in sixth grade, which she credits in part to her father.

mxmtoon Personal life

Currently residing in Nashville, Tennessee, Maia, a bisexual woman from an immigrant family, composes, records, and produces her music from the home she shares with her younger brother. In 2019, she received her high school diploma. Maia still listens to the R&B and hip-hop music her parents played her at a younger age, such as Salt-N-Pepa and A Tribe Called Quest, “for the nostalgia.”
