He credits the development of his entrepreneurial spirit to his participation in a high school program that allowed him to hold a full-time job and attend classes on an alternating weekly basis. He waited tables at Red Lobster and started a commuter van service after high school. John viewed his mother’s boyfriend, a lawyer who died at age sixteen, as a mentor and stepfather.

Daymond John Personal life

John has one daughter with his second wife, Heather Taras, whom he married in 2018. He had two daughters from his first marriage. John told a CNBC reporter that his wife “literally saw me more on TV than she saw me in person” during their first marriage, explaining that he was an absentee husband.

He blamed a mix of socializing and work for keeping him away from his wife and children. John has dyslexia. In April 2017 John was diagnosed with stage II thyroid cancer. John’s cancerous nodule was successfully removed during surgery.

After learning to sew, a young man named John Brown founded FUBU in his mother’s home in Hollis, Queens. He and his neighbor decided to sew expensive woolen ski hats that sold for $20. In 1992, they made $800 in a single day. After that, they began selling screen-printed T-shirts at large events and on consignment.

While working on the FUBU business, John held a part-time job at Red Lobster. He recruited his friends Keith Perrin and J. Alexander Martin to work for the company, where they sewed the FUBU logo onto T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hockey jerseys.

Rappers were given hockey jerseys to use in music videos, and thirty videos featured product placements. Because of this, FUBU was able to grow into a well-known clothing brand, which drove demand from retailers. At the 1994 Las Vegas fashion trade show MAGIC, John and his business partners received orders from retailers totaling $300,000.
