Born in Michigan to a Jewish family, Brianne Nadeau grew up in Grosse Pointe. She received the Scouts’ highest honor, the Gold Award, after spending 13 years as a Girl Scout. According to Nadeau, the Girl Scouts taught her that when you find something, leave it for a better one and look for work. In 2002, Nadeau earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston College.
In 2006, she graduated from American University with a master’s degree in public policy. She was a scheduler for Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes. Nadeau promoted progressive causes for nonprofit organizations while serving as vice president and public relations consultant for Rabinowitz Communications.

Brianne Nadeau is married to Kaiser Permanente consultant Jason Harpster and they live in the Park View neighborhood. In September 2017, Nadeau and Harpster’s daughter was born. Nadeau is the first member of the D.C. Council to become pregnant while in office.
When Nadeau was elected to the council in 2014, she had lived in the District of Columbia for 13 years. During a lengthy hearing, Nadeau’s speech from the podium captured national attention. “I didn’t want to back down from the committee,” was Nadeau’s statement.

In 2014, former Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Ann Nadeau challenged four-term council member Jim Graham for the Council of the District of Columbia seat. Nadeau prioritized constituent services, affordable housing, transit, and long-term solutions to persistent problems. Nadeau defended herself after Graham accused her of irregularities in a home-buyer program.
The Inspector General cleared Nadeau of all charges after an investigation. Nadeau, along with Libertarian John Watt LaBeaume and Independent Ernest Johnson, won the general election, defeating Graham in the primary.
Developers, lawyers, lobbyists, and corporations contributed to Nadeau’s campaign when she announced her intention to run for a second term on the D.C. Council in 2018. She received nearly 80% of the vote to win the Ward 1 seat on the DC City Council in 2022. In 2016, the Office of Campaign Finance audited her campaign.
