Alysa Liu Biography (Introduction): American competitive figure skater Alysa Liu has won several medals, including the 2021 Lombardia Trophy, the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy, and the 2022 World bronze medal. She has also won the U.S. National Championships twice. Liu won two senior national titles at age 14 and, at age 13, she became the youngest U.S. women’s national champion.

She is the first woman to win two consecutive U.S. titles since Ashley Wagner in 2012 and 2013. Liu is also an accomplished jumper; in the same event, she completed a quadruple jump and a triple Axel in international competition. She was included in the Time 100 Next list for the first time in 2019. Liu is a valuable and innovative figure skater due to her accomplishments in figure skating and jumps.

Alysa Liu Biography

Arthur Liu, a lawyer who came to the United States from Sichuan, China in the 1990s, is the father of Alysa Liu, who was born on August 8, 2005, in Clovis, California. She was conceived with the help of a surrogate mother and an anonymous egg donor. Liu was regarded as China’s top female recruit, as part of its “naturalization project” to recruit foreign athletes for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Her father, who fled China as a political refugee after participating in pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989, did not agree. Liu and her father were targeted in November 2021 by spies allegedly working for the Chinese government in an attempt to gather personal data on Chinese political dissidents living in the United States.

According to Liu’s father, the scheme was possibly designed to intimidate her into keeping quiet about political or human rights abuses in China. After receiving assurances that the US State Department would take further steps to protect her, he agreed to allow her to compete. Liu began studying psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall of 2023.

Alysa Liu Education

After studying at the Chinese School for three years, Liu transferred to the Oakland School for the Arts, which had a figure skating program. She was homeschooled at her father’s law office and enrolled at the California Connections Academy after missing classes due to competitions.

She is currently enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating from high school in June 2021. She reduced her social media use in 2020 as a result of unfavorable comments.

Alysa Liu Early Career

When Liu was five, she began skating and took group lessons with her childhood coach, Laura Lipetsky. At age five and a half, she began working with choreographer Cindy Stuart. She became the youngest female skater to win an intermediate gold medal at the 2016 U.S. Championships after placing seventh at the Central Pacific Regionals in 2015.

She finished fourth in the novice category in 2017, but could not maintain her narrow lead as she did not receive sufficient program component scores. Liu made her junior debut and won the national junior championships in San Jose, California, during the 2017–18 season.

She achieved a season-best short program score of 120.33 points and the second-highest score ever at the junior level with a long program score of 120.33 points. Liu was too young to compete at the 2018 World Junior Championships, even though she won gold.

Alysa Liu Comeback (2024–2025)

In March 2024 Liu announced she was going back to competitive figure skating because she had not experienced the adrenaline rush since stopping. Working with coaches Amy Evidente and Ivan Dinev, she moved her training base to Lakewood Ice in California and returned to her previous coaches.

In October 2024 Liu competed at the 2024 CS Budapest Trophy, winning gold in the short program and placing second in the free skate. Due to her underrotated jump, she finished seventh in the free skate at the 2024 Skate Canada International but placed second in the short program.

Liu said she was happy to compete once again as the past two years had been a bit rough. At the 2024 NHK Trophy, she finished fourth. She competed at the 2024 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb in December and won the gold medal. She competed at the 2025 U.S. Championships in January 2025, winning the short program and placing second in the free skate.

Alysa Liu Facts

Liu signed a contract with the American Girl toy manufacturer after Team Toyota announced them as a new sponsor in December 2020. Liu was one of the athletes selected by Ralph Lauren to serve as a model for their collection for Team USA. Liu has appeared in several magazines, such as Elle, Sports Illustrated, Time, and International Figure Skating Magazine. She also appeared on the 2019 Kids’ Choice Awards, The Tonight Show, and Today.

In 2019, Liu made the Time 100 Next list for the first time, and in May 2020, she was recognized as a Gold House A100 Honoree. Additionally, she was featured at the 2019 Kids’ Choice Awards, where she presented an award to alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn. Liu is well-known in the figure skating community as a result of her accomplishments and recognition.
