Alex Lee was born in San Jose, California. His parents left Hong Kong and moved to the US. His mother works as a nurse, and his father is an engineer. After his parents divorced, Alex Lee moved to North San Jose with his mother and Milpitas with his father. In 2013, Lee received his bachelor’s degree from Milpitas High School.
After developing an interest in filmmaking, he eventually decided to enroll at the University of California, Davis, earning two degrees in politics, science, and communication. After running for a position in the UC Davis Student Senate in 2014, Lee was elected Student Senate President in 2016. In 2017, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.
During his college years, Lee worked in several musicals as a schoolboy, including Kansen Chu, Ed Chow, Ivan Lo, Mike Honda, and Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. Following Chu’s release from the State Assembly, Lee announced his candidacy for the 25th District in June 2019. He received the endorsement of the Democratic Socialists of America in the election as a Democratic Socialist.
